What Is a Throttle Body? Cleaning, Features, uses

The throttle body works to regulate the car engine. It is important for the acceleration of the car, and with the use of a sensor, it controls the air-fuel mixture. If it becomes faulty or gets dust, there is bad performance.

So proper service is needed for the throttle body, and if it cannot be repaired, then it should be replaced with a new model. In this post we will cover features of the throttle body and learn how to clean the throttle body.

What is a throttle body?

  • The fuel-injected vehicle engine needed air for the combustion process. They not only burn fuel but also require fuel and air for combustion.
  • As a result of spark combustion, which occurs due to the air and fuel mixture, power is given to the engine.
  • The fuel injectors control the amount of fuel that enters the vehicle’s engine, and the throttle body controls air.
  •  The throttle body exists in the engine bay, a small part of the vehicle that controls the air that enters the combustion chamber of the engine.
  •  The vehicle engine uses air for the production of combustion. A high quantity of air causes larger combustion.
  •  The throttle body controls the air entering the combustion chamber. It is normally connected between the air intake manifold and the engine air filter, which is connected to the vehicle engine.

What Is a Throttle Body

Throttle Body Working

The main function of the throttle body is to control air entering the engine, and its working is as

  • The throttle body is connected at the accelerator pedal through a mechanical connection in older model vehicles, and advanced vehicles have their electronic connection with a drive-by-wire system.
  • When we press the accelerator pedal, in result, the throttle plates that exist in the throttle body open, and as a result, air enters the engine.
  • The throttle position sensor is the main part of the throttle body that controls the throttle plate angle.
  • Due to pressing or releasing the accelerator pedal, the sensor transmits an electrical signal to the engine control module that shows the current throttle plate position.
  • ECM manages different engine functions, like ignition timing, injection, and air intake.
  • According to the input of the throttle position sensor, the ECM manages the fuel needed for mixing with air. It helps to get the required combustion process and different engine parts working.
  • When the throttle plate is open, air flows into the engine with the help of the intake manifold process.
  • The ECM manages the fuel injector to provide the proper fuel amount; as a result, a proper air-fuel mixture occurs.
  • When the accelerator pedal is released, the throttle plate closes and restricts airflow and fuel movement.

throttle body location

  • Older-type cars with carbureted engines come with a throttle body in the carburetor. Its opening and closing occurs through a cable and is connected with the gas pedal and engine vacuum, resulting in a larger fuel flow due to the valve opening.
  • A fuel-injected engine has a throttle body between the air filter and intake manifold and is connected with the gas pedal through a cable or wire.
  • When you press the pedal while driving, the butterfly of the throttle body moves to provide air flow to the manifold.
  • After throttle position sensors send a signal to the ECU, step on the gas. Sensors detect a larger quantity of air flow and give a signal to the car computer to increase the fuel amount given with the injector.

How to Clean a Throttle Body?

Follow these steps for cleaning the throttle body.

  1. First of all, disconnect the ground pins or the negative of your car battery.
  2. Now find small hoses connected with the throttle body or air ducts removed for easy access to the throttle body.
  3. Disconnect the air duct connected with the throttle body; avoid disconnection of electrical wires. air duct with throttle body connected with a hose clamp that can be loosened with a screwdriver or other similar tool. In some conditions the air duct is pressed in at a point and removed with a twist. Some cars have both sides of the throttle body connected with air ducts through hose clamps, so remove one side to get access to the throttle body for cleaning.
  4. If facing difficulty removing air ducts to access the throttle body, do not work further; get the services of a professional technician.
  5. Remove the air duct for accessing the throttle body. Try to avoid damaging the gasket. There are many types of throttle bodies; some cars have 2 throttle body. Some models come with electronic throttle control that is called “drive by wire.”
  6. After accessing the throttle body, spray the throttle body and clean the air duct, and use brushes for removing dust and other particles.
  7. Continue this process until the inner side becomes clean. with use of a flashlight for checking cleaning
  8. Before using a new throttle body, use any oil on the shaft of the throttle shaft where it connects to the throttle body.
  9. with use of towels for cleaning residue and moisture that spilled on the engine and other parts
  10. Now reconnect the throttle body ducts and strongly tighten the hose clamps as before.
  11. After reconnection, remove all parts and materials under the hood and connect the battery and engine.
  12. Wait for the engine to idle for some time. then drive the vehicle

Common Throttle Body Problems

  • There are some errors that affect the working of the throttle body; one of them is a damaged temperature sensor.
  • • The throttle body comes with a temperature sensor for measuring the temperature of air and fuel when it enters the combustion chamber of the engine. If it’s not working, your car can stop working.
  • High dust and debris also affect the temperature of the throttle body.
  • Air also comes with dust particles, and an air filter removes particles but not completely.
  • So dust gathers in the throttle body with time. That makes an uneven air-to-fuel ratio.
  • Clean the throttle body for the collection of dust particles causing bad fuel ratio.
  • There are different products that exist that are made for cleaning thethrottle body. Use them for cleaning the throttle body.

signs of a faulty throttle body

These are the main symptoms of a faulty throttle body.

  1. If the throttle body is not working, it means there is not uniform air entering the mixture, which results in less power and the car not accelerating. Normally when the accelerator is pressed, normal air burns excess fuel coming in, but for a fault, there is not accurate air flow, and the required power is not produced.
  2. Due to the fault of not properly producing power, it causes problems for the accelerator. A car can have bad acceleration or not accelerate after some points, and it affects power and engine working.
  3. If the throttle body is not working well, it causes low idling. That menacing engine causes stalling after coming to a stop and less idle after starting. Dust causes airflow in the system to be turbulent, which results in affecting speed.
  4. The main cause for throttle body clogging is dust accumulation and grime that is called coking. It makes a rough surface that affects air fuel and also engine working. Carbon deposition also results in an uneven surface.
  5. Fuel economy is also affected due to the choking throttle body. The main method for measuring mileage is to use the full tank to full tank method. In this process, first fill the fuel tank and note the odometer readings, and set the trip meter to 0 value and drive for some kilometers. Fill the tank again, and note the net fuel used. You can get the distance covered with fuel used to give the car mileage. If the result is more than 15 percent, it means there is a problem with the throttle body.
  6. • The car also has different electronic parts, and dust in the electronic sensor of the throttle body affects the air-fuel mixture. that causes the car’s secondary power to be in reduced mode until the issue is solved. Some other vehicles have reduced power, limiting the engine rpm, methods
  7. If you have any error with the throttle body working, it sends a signal to the electronic system of the throttle. that will turn on the engine light

 How many throttle bodies?

  • Some vehicles come with a single larger throttle body, and some have larger V6, V8, or V12 engines that can come with each blank cylinder.
  • Some modules come with a throttle body having two smaller throats and butterflies rather than a larger single one, like older Ford truck EFI motors.
  • The proper working air filter is good for the working of the throttle body, since dust creation affects the butterfly, resulting in rough idle and drivability errors.
  • Based on the PCV breather connection on the car motor, you get oil residue creation.

When to Replace Your Throttle Body

  • If you have a damaged throttle body, it faces different symptoms that affect fuel efficiency and working performance.
  • The main symptom is rough idle since the engine is not getting the required air for fuel value.
  • You can detect low acceleration or low response when pressing the gas pedal.
  • There is a check engine light on that shows details for idle speed or throttle body issues.
  • When you face these signs, not ignoring them can cause serious errors. So after detection of faults, replace the faulty throttle body.
